Sharon Hsu is Director and Owner of Peter Pan Daycare.
As a kid growing up in Taiwan, she had a natural affinity for caring for children. She always took care of younger children around the neighbourhood and, in grade school, she volunteered at a local orphanage. She dreamed of one day running an orphanage of her own. As it turns out, she ended up working in daycare instead.
Sharon comes from a business background. Having moved to Toronto in her teens, she pursued business and computer training at Ryerson University. It was when she moved to Calgary with her young family in the 1980s that she got to put both her business intuition and passion for child care to use. She bought Peter Pan Daycare in March 1987. In her role as Director, she could spend time with her own kids and provide quality daycare for other families with young children at the same time.
Sharon is a creative person who constantly looks to bring new ideas and activities to the daycare. She is always willing to try new things. The diversity of experience of her own life is reflected in the daycare's programming.
Sharon's early childhood education training is extensive. She is a certified Child Development Supervisor (formerly Level Three), the highest level of expertise outlined by the Alberta government. She completed diplomas in early childhood education at the University of Calgary and in school age programming at Bow Valley College. In March 2011, she travelled to Italy for a weeklong training program in the Reggio Emilia Method. She believes in continual education and training, and regularly attends conferences and workshops. Sharon is also certified in First Aid, holds a Class 4 driver's license, and is trained in food handling and safety.
Sharon won the Leadership in Child Care Community award in 2006, a commendation sponsored by the leading organizations involved in early childhood education in the Calgary area. She was also nominated in 2004 and 2005.
In July 2009 Sharon travelled to Rwanda to volunteer at a rural orphanage, returning full circle to her dream of supporting children in need. Since fall 2016, she has focused Peter Pan's program on Before and After School Care at Altadore Elementary School.
